on host #1:
/sbin/ifconfig lp0 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2


on host #2:
/sbin/ifconfig lp0 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.1

works well for me.  i your hardware unusual in some way ?

you can recompile the kernel with DEBUG defined in /sys/i386/isa/lpt.c to 
get additional information
