Why not? You can use it as a status display as long as you keep it open. When you close it, the storage used by its state is freed, and so you can't switch to it anymore. This is the technique used by sysinstall to show debugging information on the second console. If you leave a getty running on it, you can still write to it and use it as a status display, and because the getty keeps it open, you can read the status even after it's closed.
