I've deleted my ports tree (except for distfiles) and fetched a new one with portmaster. Now openjdk16 compiles successfully. So it appears something stale in the ports tree caused the previous attempts to fail. Now the problem is with cd-paranoia failing to compile, which is apparently being worked on, see http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2011-October/070701.html Thanks everyone!
