My humble suggestion: We don't support using an up-to-date ports collection with an older FreeBSD system, and typically it's up to the maintainer of a port if he or she wants to preserve support for older machines. What we may need to do instead is provide new upgrade kits which users of older releases can install to add missing a minimal amount of new functionality to their system so they can build ports.
