For the record, 6.8.1 only adding patch
"patch-kbd sparc 2.c" is what corrected my problem.

My slow sparc is busy upgrading xorg to 6.8.2 via
"portupgrade -R xorg" and it's at work now so I'll test=20
and report on Monday about 6.8.2 behavior.

--mikej

p.s. Dejan I had started the portupgrade before receiving=20
your updated message about my ' and " problem.

Well, when I have time I'll try again, but it would be very interessting
which of the two patches corrected the problem for the others.
Btw: I just read the changelog for XFree-4.5 and found the following:
"Fix off-by-one problem for keys on FreeBSD/sparc64."
Perhaps this fix also works for xorg...=20
