Probably the same reason you think you need root access on your UNIX machines. 8-). There's a company that will root InterJets for $50. They also replace (in IJ I's) the 10Mbit network card with 10/100Mbit, and will upgrade the IJ I's 28K modem to 56K (not usually useful, since you can't sync 56K if you are going through a PBX). And they will upgrade your memory (not always a good idea on an IJ I, unless you can get the right memory sticks with the tin, not the gold contacts). You can find it with a Yahoo search fairly easily. Julian, Archie, and I, and Mark Peek, and Evan Oldford, and ... all know the magic root password. But we can't tell you, or we'd have to kill you, since there are thousands of places that are still using them. Sorry about the telnet... I can tell you how to turn it on, but since you don't have a Whistle, Inc. Engineering network IP address, it's not going to do you any good. 8-). Well, it would let you in from the office net, I guess, but no remote maintenance, if that's what you are looking for... If Mark Peek is still with IBM these days (he hasn't told us he's not), then he probably still has full source code for the thing. Mark, are you listening?
