Errr, not necessarily.  It detected a serial device at that port/IRQ location,
which could also just be a built-in serial port or a serial card or whatever.

Weird error message.  I've never seen anything like that before.

You have no idea what kind of modem you have?

The original poster reaaly needs to provide more info.  What type of modem? 
Internal/external?  At what port/IRQ is it *supposed* to be detected?  Have you
tried setting up your /etc/ppp at all, and if so, what do your configuration
files look like.

We can't just pull answers out of thin air without something to go on here.
