The big difference in the "fixed" case is that pulseaudio seems to create additional vchans for playback _and_ recording. Curiously both at 44.1kHz instead of 48kHz. Maybe the vchan processing has a problem which gets worked around by the additional processing nodes in the graph. Or maybe the hardware likes to ru= n in duplex and any open recording channel fixes that.
