If you have to ask, you should run 2.2.8. 3.0 is more of a 'checkpoint' release than a full-fledged introduction to the 3.0 architecture. 2.2.8 will summarize existing changes to the -STABLE tree, and will officially terminate that branch. The follow-on to 3.0, 3.0.1 or 3.0.5 or whatever, will be the next big target after 2.2.8; 3.0 should be in good shape by then.
