Forwarded to -multimedia, maybe someone over here can help :) ------ Forwarded message ------ From: thomas@ <mailto:thomas@hentschel.net> no.hentschel.net.spam Subject: Astra 1200S & FreeBSD (Astra 1200 again ...) Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 17:47:43 -0700 (PDT) To: sane-devel@mostang.com <mailto:sane-devel@mostang.com> Hi all, I came into possesion of a umax Astra 1200S, and would like to get it going on my FreeBSD machine. Here is the problem : # scanimage-list-devices device 'umax:/dev/scanner' is a UMAX Astra 1200S flatbed scanner device 'pnm:0' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device device 'pnm:1' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device After upping SANE_DEBUG_UMAX, I get the following output, where irrelevant parts are snipped for brevity : # scanimage -d umax > output.ppm .... [umax] fast preview function = 0 [umax] trying to reposition scanner ... [umax] wait_scanner that's were scanimage hangs and the following messages appear [umax] scanner reports Device busy, waiting ... Aug 1 17:02:15 dorothy /kernel: uk1(aha0:4:1): timed out if the scanner now get's power-cycled, it continues on until : ... [umax] scanner ready [umax] reader_process: buffer of 17850 bytes read; 0 bytes to go [umax] reader_process: finished reading data ... [umax] sane_read: read 0 bytes [umax] do_cancel [umax] killing reader_process [umax] reader_process killed [umax] trying to reposition scanner ... [umax] wait_scanner [umax] scanner ready [umax] scanner repositioned [umax] trying to release scanner ... [umax] wait_scanner Here it stops again (same messages as above) and another power cycle is in order, then it goes : [umax] scanner ready [umax] scanner released [umax] closing scannerdevice filedescriptor [umax] close_pipe [umax] sane_cancel [umax] sane_close [umax] sane_exit which then completes the scan. Here is the machine info : Pentium 133 / 32 Meg FreeBSD 2.2.8 release SCSI host adaptor is a adaptec 1542 CP which get's detected as follows : > aha0 at 0x330-0x333 irq 12 drq 5 on isa I've changed the BIOS settings as per suggestion in the mailing list archives and disabled disconnect/reconnect. the Scanner is a umax astra 1200 S-C, Firmware Rev. 3.1, detectet as follows : > (aha0:4:0): "UMAX Astra 1200S V3.1" type 6 fixed SCSI 2 > uk0(aha0:4:0): Unknown > (aha0:4:1): "UMAX Astra 1200S V3.1" type 6 fixed SCSI 2 > uk1(aha0:4:1): Unknown I'm running SANE-1.0.1 /dev/scanner is symlinked to /dev/uk1 I've read the recent thread with Lee Nevo, where it turned out to be a SCSI termination problem, so I went off buying new (shorter) cables and rearranged the external SCSI bus to be terminated by a device with active termination (External CD-ROM) -- the problem is to get a 25DB active terminator, so I opted for this solution-same problem persists. The total cable lenght now is ~ 120 cm, there are no devices on the internal side of the host adaptor and the host adaptor is set to terminate. The reason why I don't think that this is a termination problem is that those problem should show a bit more "randomness". I've run it ~ 50 times now, changing configurations etc. and it ALWAYS shows the exact same behavior (unless I leave the termination off altogether, then it doesn't even start talking to the scanner). In addition, it hangs on the first "[umax] trying to reposition scanner ...", but it succesfully completes the second one after it's done scanning... There was also a mentioning of the astra 1200S with Firmware Rev. 2.9 and ext. Power-supply "could make problems" on Olivers Site http://www.wolfsburg.de/~rauch/sane/sane-umax-scanners-doc.html <http://www.wolfsburg.de/~rauch/sane/sane-umax-scanners-doc.html> Anyone know if that's still the case with Rev. 3.1 and does anyone know what the exact symptoms of the problems are ?? Thanks in advance if anyone could shed a light on this. If more information is needed I'm happy to provide what's necessary.
