What is the procedure? i386 to amd64 is probably not impossible, but moving from one arch to another one by compiling source and upgrading is serious guru level stuff. Apart from anything else cross compiling to amd64 binaries on an i386 system is a potential source of grief. The best and surest way to change arch is to do a complete reinstall from scratch. Wipe out your i386 system and overwrite the space with amd64 from install media.
