A number of people have voiced confusion about various threaded programming issues. I have a whole stack of books about threads programming, and one of those books sticks out as being quite good. Of course, it is concerned with pthreads, but the author is careful to explain the concepts before jumping into examples, so this book is useful even for kernel programmers who never set foot in user land. I didn't originally learn about threaded programming from this book, but I wish I had: Programming with POSIX Threads David R.
