If I run "bonnie++ -s 4G -n 40" ... meaning create 4G files for the thruput test and create 40*1024 files for the random file test, it will die claiming the directory is not empty --- ie: deletion of some files failed. In this particular case, The server is an AMD64 5.4-STABLE and the client is AMD64 5.3-RELEASE-p5. The filesystem is a 1.0T RAID10 (geom) with softupdates enabled.
