I just read about someone who did something like that, but couldn't boot FreeBSD until installing some boot manager (System Commander?) that was smart enough to handle the task. I'm fairly sure that recent LILO can do it and probably GRUB too. From reading boot0cfg man page, it sounds like the standard FreeBSD BM can sometimes do it too when installed with certain non-standard options; but that does you no good until you can boot it up once.
