are you using an older version of fetchmail by any chance?   I had a similar
error and after much investigation and logging read the the friendly fetchmail
documentation where I found a passing mention of this - upgraded - problem gone

fetchmail release 5.4.1+POP2+RPA+SDPS+INET6+NLS
