I don't expect it to be merged all the way back to 2.2-stable. However, you may be able to distill the necessary incantations and test them and submit them for inclusion. I don't believe it would be a worthwhile exercise, however, since a HD failure is generally (hopefully) a one (or few-) time occurrence.
