Have you checked that the mixer volume and/or pcm is not set to 0?
Several people reported that their mixer was by default:

parish# mixer
Mixer vol is currently set to 77:77 <<====
Mixer pcm is currently set to 78:78 <<====
Mixer speaker is currently set to 80:80
Mixer line is currently set to 78:78
Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0
Mixer cd is currently set to 78:78
Mixer rec is currently set to 0:0
Mixer line1 is currently set to 78:78
Mixer video is currently set to 78:78
parish#

Change it with:

       mixer vol 100 etc.
