Hi all,

sometimes, reading documentation does help :-)
I followed the instructions at https://github.com/wulf7/iichid and added
this:

    ig4_load="YES"
    iicbus_load="YES"

to the already present

    iichid_load="YES"

in /boot/loader.conf, and now touchpad works.

cheers!
Michael
