Attempting to contact the ncurses author, and/or discussing your propsed fix on one of the mailing lists, then waiting a day or two to let everyone get up to speed on the problem would not have resulted in too significant of a delay in getting the problem fixed. This particular problem is not a huge one, so please don't feel like everyone is ganging up on you. The point is simply that for the future, it's better to discuss first. For instance, another acceptable short term solution to fix bash would be to comment out the trace() function temporarily, since it's only used when you put the shell in debug mode (it can't be reached otherwise). Of course, you could always delay adding the option to compile the shell static until after this had all been sorted out...
