What color depth are you running? I've gotten similar error
messages on SunOS boxes running 8-bit color when I have too many colors
allocated and try to start up xpaint. I've never had the problem under
XFree or Accelerated X, because I usually run 16 bit color...
If you're running 8 bit color, this might be your problem. If
you're running 16 or 32 bit color, you've got some other problem.
If you are running with 8 bit color, try freeing up some colors.
If you've got a background pic, under fvwm, and possibly some other window
managers, you can type: "xsetroot -solid black" and your background will
change to solid black. Under tvtwm, the equivalent would be "ssetroot
-solid black".

Hope this helps,

Ken
