What color depth are you running? I've gotten similar error messages on SunOS boxes running 8-bit color when I have too many colors allocated and try to start up xpaint. I've never had the problem under XFree or Accelerated X, because I usually run 16 bit color... If you're running 8 bit color, this might be your problem. If you're running 16 or 32 bit color, you've got some other problem. If you are running with 8 bit color, try freeing up some colors. If you've got a background pic, under fvwm, and possibly some other window managers, you can type: "xsetroot -solid black" and your background will change to solid black.
