I haven't used FreeBSD since it's beginning in 1993, so I don't know how much it's use has grown each year, but I hardly think FreeBSD is going to die. Who's going to kill it? Microsoft? Microsoft's long term strategy is to move everybody to WinNT 5.0. WinNT 5.0 is 30 million lines of bloat. It's recommended that you have a minimum of 64 megs of RAM to run it. How about Linux? Seems to me I hear more and more about Linux users converting to FreeBSD. Sure, Linux will probably always have a larger userbase that FreeBSD, but what is FreeBSD about? World Domination or a really great OS? If FreeBSD was a commercial product, then yes, it would probably die. But since the majority of people who develop for FreeBSD do it because they are passionate about it and it interests them, I think it will not only survive, but also thrive.
