Actually, that is not possible, at least in some countries (including Germany, for example). If you're the author of some piece of software, you're the holder of the "Urheberrecht" (the rights that you have, being the author). You cannot get rid of your Copyright even if you wanted to. There is no notion of "public domain" in the law. Declaring the software to be "public domain" merely means that you attach a license to the effect that everyone can do anything with it without asking you, _but_ you are still the original author, with all associated rights that you have as such. Actually you don't even have to include a phrase like "Copyright (C) 2001 by John Doe", because it's implied.
