I don't know if it is good enough but

$ strings -a /bin/ls | grep GCC
GCC: (GNU) 4.2.1 20070831 patched [FreeBSD]
(... -- more 6 times.)

detects the compiler here (FreeBSD 9.0p1). The only one I have.
