It hasn't been changed significantly since 2.0 (only 8 lines have been
changed insignificantly).

It cannot work as an lkm (getdirentries() in kern/vfs_syscalls.c has
`#ifdef UNION').  This may be considered as a feature :-).  ls obviously
fails, so you don't more complicated things which will hang the file
system(s) or system.
