I maintain a largely revamped squid-2.5 port locally which among other
things adresses this issue. I keep sending Adrian patches for about 4
months now, unfortunately he seems to be too busy to review and commit
them at the moment.

I am thinking of send-pr'ing the patch before the weekend so it might
get somewhat broader review before the ports freeze.
