this is an answer ... kind of ...

i just installed netscape 3.0 from the netscape site, the FreeBSD version.
it's running fine - for the first 5 minutes or so of every session.

it crashes after the first 5 minutes or so of use (so that you have to
kill it) - after following a couple of links.

it will crash if i stay at the startup screen, and click my right
mouse button 25 times or so.

i notice each time i restart it, it takes a little longer to start up.
after 5 or so restarts, everything hangs, and i must reboot.

i start it from an xterm window, ie, shell, in the command-line.

i searched the maillist, but didn't see this problem, exactly.
is it running fine for other 2.2.1 users?

i can play with the mail for much longer, and it doesn't crash
anything - so far.

i allocated 2M for RAM cache, 4 for disk.

i also notice it crashes, even when run as root, if trying to
save an address/bookmark to w31 netscapes stuff on a DOS partition.

i did find i could get it to use w31 addressbook/bookmark by
manually entering a new field in the preferences file, even though
the address field disappears after you run netscape once.

*** warning *** i traced this down to using my W31 netscapes bookmarks
and addressbook on my DOS partition. but i still don't understand how
netscape could get messed up by that! i mean, it just requests info from
a driver, and gets it - i don't think it knows if it came from dos or bsd?
and no other programs crash when accessing data from /dos ... ?
