I've only installed FreeBSD a few times, only once 4.1 and I use IDE HDs. Whenever I've installed to the slave on the first IDE cable, the install procedure asked which drive. ad0 or ad1 for 4.1. It's a separate part of the procedure, after the device config. etc. Did you let the BIOS find the drive parameters? I usually find it's best (with award BIOS) not to use the autodetect setting, but detect the drive manually. Also there have been questions here relating to other OSs being more likely to work with wrongly set drive jumpers and/or masterless slaves. >How can install FreeBSD on the second drive without loosing the data on >the first drive. If you know the C:H:S values for the first drive and those values are shown on the disk slice setup page, or it looks like you're working on ad0; abort. There's a preview of the installation for 4.0 at http://people.freebsd.org/~rpratt/40/index.html Good luck John.
