What about this scheme:

Machine 1               Machine 2
ttya (console) <------> ttyb
ttyb <----------------> ttya (console)

Disable getty process on ttyb for each machine!

Pinout for cables:
1 <-------> 8
2 <-------> 7
3 <-------> 6
4 <-------> 5
5 <-------> 4
6 <-------> 3
7 <-------> 2
8 <-------> 1
