Hi everybody.. I've got a client whom I have decided to do a custom FreeBSD install for, in order to set up a firewall/router/server for his home Internet connection. This would all be fine and well, and easily done.. HOWEVER... Due to the way his Internet connection is set up (it is a proprietary DSL-like network here, using a custom (READ: HAND-CRAFTED :) modem which needs to connect to an AppleTalk card), I don't think swapping hardware is an option. In his current setup, he has a DOS based 386 machine with an ISA "Farallon PhoneNET PC Card 3" AppleTalk card. His DOS setup is currently doing a very POOR job of routing TCP/IP to his Pentium desktop machine through an EtherNET card. (His routing/NAT software is quite neandrathal, preventing him from doing much more than browse, FTP and grab mail... Further, the configuration is HARD CODED in the executables, and source code is currently not available) I couldn't find any support in the LINT config, not to mention HARDWARE.TXT :) A quick check of the mailing list archives didn't turn up any information specific to what I'm trying to do either. As a replacement, he has recently purchased a 486 with an ample hard drive, which he wants to use as a LAN router AND public HTTP/mail/FTP server (not expecting daily hits in the millions just yet :) My burning question is, CAN that AppleTalk card be utilized by any version of FreeBSD? (i.e. anyone know where I can find a driver?) I've found (what looks like) support for the AppleTalk protocol in the LINT kernel, but haven't followed that up further, because, without kernel support for the card itself, I'm guessing I'd be up a creek faster than you could say "proprietary". :) Or... Can anybody recommend a compatible replacement? His "modem" (bunch of circuits soldered together) sends and recieves through a DSL-like line, and communicates with his 386 through an AppleTalk connector. (i.e. no RJ45 plug here :) Further, I believe he is authenticated through the ID number of the Farallon card. (Again, visions of a creek are prominent in my mind :) Thanks to any and all who venture a guess as to what I might try :) - Ryan Thompson To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
