i can get vmware to start, but it seems to be having emotional problems
getting networking up and running. it gets as far as finding the vmnet
device, but ends up sending an unsupported ioctl:
linux: 'ioctl' fd=22, cmd=8940 ('\M^I',64) not implemented
if i turn networking off, vmware works fine (but is not entirely useful
for my purposes).
