Make / a big partition. Make something other than /root root's home directory (having /root the home dir means you have root's home dir even if /usr and /var aren't mounted, but if /var and /usr aren't mounted you're probably doing maintenance anyway and should have what you need in other / directories - /bin, /sbin.
