Problem ports/66247 went magically away after going to the latest -CURRENT:
(5.2-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT #1: Tue May 11 17:07:55 CEST 2004)

I don't know who made the relevant changes, but thanx anyway to
everyone working on -CURRENT!
