This is happening in a lot of other cases, like "portupgrading" php5, "pkgdb -L", etc... I was experiencing this on 8.1/i386, while 7.3/amd64 works fine. Right now I cannot do any further cross testing, i.e. see if 8.1/amd64 or 7.3/i386 work. On the incriminated boxes, I downgraded to ruby 1.8 and this is not happening anymore. bye av.
