I'm trying to install FreeBSD 4.4, but so far I haven't even made it
into sysinstall. When I exit the kernel configuration, something goes
wrong during kernel initialization and the system freezes before even
getting to the "probing devices..." screen. When booting with `boot -v',
here's what's left on the screen:

The only ISA card in my system (Pentium MMX, Intel 430 TX chipset,
1 IDE HD, CD drive and writer on a Symbios 860 SCSI controller,
Realtek-8029-based NIC) is a Soundblaster 32 AWE. I would be perfectly
happy just to ignore it for the moment and get on with the installation,
but I don't know how to disable PnP autoprobing.

Perhaps this isn't a PnP problem, but I don't know what else could be
the cause. Here's what I've already tried:
- I've stripped the kernel configuration to the bare minimum (can't
install without the ATA, keyboard and console drivers). I have
definitely not included the Advansys driver--I have no idea why it pops
up in the messages.
- The install disks themselves are fine. They do work in another computer.
- The "PNP OS [Y/N]" setting in the BIOS setup doesn't have any effect
here. I've tried it either way.
- The computer is not a complete wreck. I've downloaded the FreeBSD
3.5.1 install disks (AFAIK 3.5.1 doesn't have PnP support), and they do
get into sysinstall.

So my questions are:
Is this actually a PnP problem or was the kernel just finished with that
and stumbled over the very next thing it was trying to do?
How can I keep the kernel from doing the PnP dance?
What else could I try?
