I've tried putting my DVD-rws in Restricted Overwrite mode, but it doesn't work either. After it is formatted I can write once, but subsequent writes return: Executing 'mkisofs -R -J -f /tmp/burndvd/ | builtin_dd of=/dev/pass4 obs=32k seek=0' mkisofs: Warning: -follow-links does not always work correctly; be careful. /dev/pass4: "Current Write Speed" is 2.0x1385KBps. :-[ WRITE@LBA=0h failed with SK=5h/ASC=21h/ACQ=02h]: Invalid argument :-( write failed: Invalid argument mediainfo claims that the DVD is in Restricted Overwrite mode: INQUIRY: [PLEXTOR ][DVDR PX-708A ][1.06] GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION: Mounted Media: 13h, DVD-RW Restricted Overwrite Media ID: MCC 01RW11n9 Current Write Speed: 2.0x1385=2770KB/s Write Speed #0: 2.0x1385=2770KB/s Write Speed #1: 1.0x1385=1385KB/s GET [CURRENT] PERFORMANCE: Write Performance: 2.0x1385=2770KB/s@[0 -> 2294911] Speed Descriptor#0: 03/2044831 R@8.0x1385=11080KB/s W@2.0x1385=2770KB/s Speed Descriptor#1: 03/2044831 R@8.0x1385=11080KB/s W@1.0x1385=1385KB/s READ DVD STRUCTURE[#10h]: Media Book Type: 32h, DVD-RW book [revision 2] Legacy lead-out at: 2298496*2KB=4707319808 READ DVD STRUCTURE[#0h]: Media Book Type: 32h, DVD-RW book [revision 2] Last border-out at: 2044832*2KB=4187815936 READ DISC INFORMATION: Disc status: appendable Number of Sessions: 1 State of Last Session: reserved/damaged "Next" Track: 1 Number of Tracks: 1 READ TRACK INFORMATION[#1]: Track State: invisible incremental, damaged Track Start Address: 0*2KB Free Blocks: 0*2KB Fixed Packet Size: 16*2KB Track Size: 0*2KB FABRICATED TOC: Track#1 : 14@4294770688 Track#AA : 14@2044832 Multi-session Info: #1@4294770688 Maybe I'm reading the page incorrectly, but it seems to suggest that you don't need to do any sort of "blanking" operation in Restricted Overwrite mode, just start a new session to restart the disc. Is this incorrect? I am using the following command to burn the discs: growisofs -R -J -f -Z /dev/cd2 burndir I generally don't want to append data to the DVD-RWs, but rather overwrite them. My current procedure is to burn the DVDs as above and use burncd -f /dev/acd2 format dvd-rw to reset the discs (dvd+rw-format refuses to do it since the discs are already formatted), but that takes forever and I have to Ctrl-C it once the lights on the drive stop flashing (it never exits otherwise). -- \ |_ _|__ __|_ \ __| Jason Andresen jandrese@mitre.org |\/ | | | / _| Network and Distributed Systems Engineer _| _|___| _| _|_\___| Office: 703-883-7755
