Install it from the port. Remove the "Broken" notice from the Makefile. And you can also look what the port actually does. OpenOffice is also in the ports tree, but I still have issues with the buggy FreeBSD gcc and g++. Once they are solved, we will be able to have a native openoffice too. You could use a linux openoffice build. I'd prefer that over the staroffice build, since there were many changes since then. Hope this helps you.
