No, you shouldn't, not really; mail should NEVER be sent to ports-bugs@ directly. The ports-bugs@ list is where GNATS, the FreeBSD problem-tracking system, sends problem report notifications and follow-ups; however, this is done automatically in response to two user actions: 1. When filing a new PR, always, ALWAYS use the freebsd-gnats-submit@ address that GNATS places in the PR by default. If you change that address, GNATS will NOT receive the problem report, and your PR will NOT be processed in the normal way. When you do send mail to freebsd-gnats-submit@, GNATS takes care of creating a PR and then sends the text to the ports-bugs@ list - automatically. 2. When responding to a PR, always, ALWAYS use either the same freebsd-gnats-submit@ address, or the more convenient bugs-followup@FreeBSD.org address. The latter is actually an alias for freebsd-gnats-submit@, so mail sent to either address gets processed by GNATS, added to the audit-trail of a problem report, and then sent to the ports-bugs@ list - again, automatically. There are some cases when people want to reply to PR's, but not have their replies added to the PR audit trail; however, those cases are so very rare (there shouldn't be any, as a matter of fact), that there is no use discussing those exceptions. In short, we should all treat ports-bugs@ as the read-only, automatic notifications list that it actually is :) As a matter of fact, this means that there is no need to CC ports-bugs@ on replies to PR's, since GNATS sends the replies there already. So, to summarize. When sending a PR, send it to freebsd-gnats-submit@, which is the default, that is, don't change anything. When replying to a PR, send the reply to bugs-followup@ (or freebsd-gnats-submit@). Never ever send e-mail directly to ports-bugs@. As I said in the subject, though, this is my opinion, rising from my experience with use of GNATS, the FreeBSD lists, and the announcement e-mails about the creation of the ports-bugs@ list itself. This may be totally wrong, but I felt that I should say it :) G'luck, Peter --=20 Peter Pentchev roam@ringlet.net roam@FreeBSD.org PGP key: http://people.FreeBSD.org/~roam/roam.key.asc Key fingerprint FDBA FD79 C26F 3C51 C95E DF9E ED18 B68D 1619 4553 What would this sentence be like if it weren't self-referential? --x+6KMIRAuhnl3hBn Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQE+O9w17Ri2jRYZRVMRAmVkAJ9AqzRQZDPtNsprnMBKyz4/NRO1MQCfZe09 E8a15Qnoy0HzAzgQzGblNwI= =WIyn -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --x+6KMIRAuhnl3hBn-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-ports" in the body of the message
