It is not that it will make the build work, though, on rare occasion, it does. It is to serialize the build so that the actual error is shown at the time that the build fails. Most modern ports build in parallel with multiple compiles running at the same time. An unfortunate side effects is that the details of the error are at some seemingly random point in the output of the build, even hundreds of lines from the failure and termination of the build. Attempting to build with MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE makes it much easier to determine exactly what failed and the output of that build is what should be provided in report like this.
