I recently bought a Maxtor 40 GB ATA 133 drive, and plugged it into an on-board Intel ATA 66 controller. I got the same errors from my drive. Then, I went out and bought a Maxtor ATA 133 controller, and I still get the same errors. This is all while installing 4.6-RELEASE. I have a working ATA 100 drive that works on both controllers. I've done all the listed workarounds for installing 4.6. I suspect bad hardware since I've tried different controllers, different cables, and different jumper settings. You may want to do a bit more troubleshooting, but you may come to the same conclusion.
