No, that's a very bad way to make it work. NT tape support is almost non-existent. You don't say how you determined that you got to the end of the tape. Programs like dump have their own idea of how big the tape is, and will stop at this point even if you haven't got to EOT. I don't know dump, but it should be in the man page. If you're getting this with tar, something's seriously wrong. Don't believe the values given for compression, BTW. 2:1 compression is about best case.
