It has been my experience with this problem that the modem is not correctly configured. (i.e. set device line is not correct, or the modem is not properly recognized) If you want to quit terminal mode at this point, you need to type ~. (that is, ). terminal mode will then quit. With the modem not configured properly, that is about all you can do in terminal mode. If you type ~. you should get back to ppp ON Circle>, then you can quit PPP properly.
