This is on a home machine so I don't need passwords. I've had it working before, but had a little accident on my disk. I suppose this should be a XFree86 question, but I think its a generic X question. I'm running 2.1-Release (waiting for the CD in the mail). XFree86 3.1.2 with the xdm authentication patch.
