This turned out to be a bug in Xorg. A patch for the xorg-server
port is at:
http://alchemy.franken.de/~marius/xorg-server.diff
and a package built with that patch at:
http://alchemy.franken.de/~marius/xorg-server-6.8.2_2.tbz
