Is it possible that my hardware config caused so > issue during the set-up stage? Most likely, yes. If you have a MSDOS boot disk, try booting off of it then type fdisk /mbr that may fix the problem. Off the top of my head, I'd slap the CDROM drive onto the same controller with the hard drive and rerun the install.
