I just discovered that I've been running FreeBSD 3.2-RELEASE all this time, and not 3.2-STABLE. This despite the fact that I've been installing from (which is actually just a symlink to 3.2-RELEASE in that same directory). The output from `uname -a` has always been there for anyone to see. I just wasn't paying attention. Sigh....
