I am having this problem as well. I have read somewhere that adding a 'sleep 1' in '/usr/local/libexec/gnome-setting-daemon-localeexec' before the actual execution of gnome would fix the problem since it is supposed to be a deadl= ock of some sort. But that only fixes it for me sometimes.
