Somebody had copied /etc/defaults/rc.conf as /etc/rc.conf and forgot to take out the code at the bottom that does: for i in ${rc_conf_files}; do if [ -f $i ]; then . $i fi done (i.e. one would recursively include one's rc files until the machine freaked).
