I have indeed stepped forward.  I am waiting on hardware 8)

I am aware of this, and have plans in hand for said rewrite.  Things
are a little tough just now with it being impossible to do -current
kernel development on a 2.2 system.

It will be possible for the two to coexist.  It is allegedly possible to
interleave printing and disk operations; I will have to see about that 
when the hardware arrives.
