Not only that, many ports have some tweaks dependent on OSVERSION; some have it ingrained into their configure shims. Personally, I got into a situation where I had to run 7.0 world on 6.3 kernel. Nothing bad happened, but I rebooted with a new kernel as soon as I could. All in all, I'd say you have a good chance to succeed, especially if you have your fingers crossed :) You won't be on the safe side, though.
