You may be using old X binaries (xterm, xdm etc.). There have been changes to the format of the utmp/wtmp files. Get a newer X11 (If you have disk space and time you may also compile the x11/XFree86 port and get up-to-date binaries). There is a utility 'cvt-wtmp' that allows you to update old /var/log/wtmp files to the new format but be warned: an old (outdated binary like xterm can spoil everything again .
